Change is constant

Do you remember that wise saying by the Greek philosopher Heraclitus?

“The only constant in life is change.” It’s so true!

And the food business sure sees lots of changes. Cherished restaurants close, chefs retire, our favorite foods on the menu get removed, but then new businesses open and we learn to like new foods and things go on. Here’s some changes I’ve been seeing recently.

Blue Lotus, the fairly new Vietnamese restaurant in Fruita, has closed. I wish the owners well and wonder what new restaurant will take its place.

Boston’s Restaurant & Sports Bar at 2408 Patterson Road in Grand Junction has reopened after experiencing a fire and being closed for repairs.

Camille’s Kaffe at 206 E. Aspen Ave. in Fruita, has a different chef and menu Thursday through Saturday nights and is called KJ’s Kitchen on those days.

Dickey’s Barbecue Pit will be opening where the former Subway was at First Street and Grand Avenue in Grand Junction. This is their second location in Grand Junction and they have over 500 locations nationwide.

Monumental Mushrooms is a new business I am excited about. They offer a variety of delicious- looking, culinary mushrooms grown in Palisade. I love how their website says they, “provide beautifully presented, gourmet mushrooms that bring joy to the dinner table and nourishment to the body.” You can learn more at www. monumentalmushrooms. com.

Munchies is opening a second location at 383 29 Road in Grand Junction.

Their other restaurant is located in Fruita, and I’m sure this new one will also be a popular spot.

Ocotillo Restaurant and Bar, located at 2325 W. Ridges Blvd. overlooking Colorado National Monument, is offering several delicious-looking five course pairing dinners. You can learn more and buy tickets at www. ocotillogj.com. It should be fun to try one of the options such as “Tequila & Tapas” or “Mediterranean Wine & Cuisine.”

Reckless Brewing Company will be opening in the location of the former Suds Brothers Brewery in Fruita at 127 E. Aspen Ave. The owners also run the popular Reckless Roadhouse in De Beque. I am curious to see their menu and check them out.

Roots Gastrohub at 410 Colorado Ave. has recently reopened after doing some construction projects. According to their announcement, they will be “offering more light breakfast items including parfaits and smoothies, and will be expanding our burrito and burger offerings as well.”

Surf to Turf is hoping to open in the not-toodistant future. Run by the same owner as the Grand International Buffet,

this new restaurant will be in the location of the former Golden Corral at 1100 Independent Ave. near Sam’s Club in Grand Junction.

Sushi Go at the Mesa Mall has temporarily closed so they can focus on their new restaurant in Delta called Sumo Sushi.

It’s located at 220 N.

Palmer. I’m hearing good things about it.

Wing Stop has recently opened a restaurant at 2835½ North Ave.

Founded in Texas in 1994, they now have over 2,000 restaurants and are known for their variety of wing flavors such as lemon pepper and mango habanero.

Our community treasure, Homestyle Bakery, has closed and now what are we going to do for Thanksgiving?

I enjoyed their pies and their adorable turkey butter! Several readers have recommended Kokopelli Farm Market (952 Interstate 70 Palisade), Spoons Bistro & Bakery (3090 N. 12th St. GJ) and the lovely owners of Chicken N’ The Bag (often open by Office Depot) told me you can even order an entire delicious sweet potato pie from them.

Are you planning to bake your own pies or do you have a place you recommend? Change can be difficult, but I know one of the secrets to a happy life is embracing change and trying new things.

Wishing you well with that too!

Food and beverage multi-course pairing winners can be a lot of fun! I’m looking forward to trying one at Ocotillo this year.
