Head out for a bite

As always, the food scene in the Grand Valley is dynamic and changing. New restaurants open, others leave, menus change and music and food continue to be a great combination.

Mother’s Day is Sunday and the season of festivals has begun! Here’s a roundup of some of the happenings.

Be sure to check directly with the businesses as information changes regularly. Have fun out there!

Angelo’s and the British Baking Co.

— This dynamic duo is teaming up for a special pottery and treats event.

Enjoy an afternoon tea on Sunday, May 18 at Angelo’s Pottery Studio at 2478 Patterson Road from 2-4 p.m. with $20 tickets available by calling Angelo’s at 970-243-0886 and include tea, coffee, hot chocolate and delicious baked goods. When you are at the studio, you will choose what pottery you want to make — prices vary.

Best Slope Pizza

— This mobile pizza company is now offering their sourdough, Neapolitan-style pizzas in Palisade at various wineries and Cruise Control in downtown Grand Junction. They will also be in Montrose today at the Rathbone Hotel. I’m looking forward to trying their pizza soon.

Blade & Bone — Check out their new menu. Located at 753 Horizon Court, they’ve pivoted from the steakhouse vibe and are exploring a more casual environment with burgers, salads and appetizers. They are open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily except Sundays. I will be trying their new menu soon and am curious about the changes.

Ceviches & Miches

— This new restaurant in Grand Junction at 200 W. Grand Ave. recently opened and features a variety of fish and shrimp ceviches and Micheladas.

I’ve been hearing good things about them and it’s fun to see something new happening in this location.

Cruise Control Kitchen + Cellar — Located at 555 Colorado Ave. in downtown Grand Junction, they are doing a “Smashed and Sauced” midwestern butter burger pop-up every Thursday from 5 to 9 p.m.

Desierto Rojo — Fruita has a new restaurant in the location of the former Mike’s Famous Chicken at 233 E. Aspen Ave. The owners say it’s going to be different from other Mexican restaurants in the valley and will mainly focus on tacos. Other items will include street corn, cheese tortillas, nopales and chicharrones. I’m especially looking forward to trying their nopales as I’m a big fan of this cactus.

Devil’s Kitchen — They will be offering a special rooftop, paired dinner on Thursday, May 22. Tickets are $55 and will feature items from their new menu. They are located at 840 Kennedy Ave. on the Colorado Mesa University campus.

Mother’s Day Pancake Breakfast — Orchard Mesa Lions’ Club 46th Annual event will be from 7-11 a.m. on Sunday at the Mesa County Fairgrounds. It is all you can eat for $10 with special pricing for children and active military. Bring your used eye glasses to donate to help others too.

Pollo Asado 2 — They have opened up in Orchard Mesa at 2740 U.S. Highway 50, #107. As evidenced by the name, it is the second location of the popular chicken place on North Avenue. People are raving about the chicken and the service. It’s a good reminder for me to swing by and pick some up for dinner for my family in the near future!

Purrl’s Tea & Curious — Pastry chef Tronette Alexander has relocated her business from Palisade to 2829 North Ave., #203, in Grand Junction. She is generally open from 10 to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday and has a variety of sandwiches, pastries, tea and events.

I’m looking forward to visiting her new location and trying some of her beautiful creations.

Snooks Bottom BBQ

— Are you hungry for barbecue? Mama Ree’s Cowboy Bar + Brewery at 664 North Ave. has switched out their pizza with barbecue offerings from Snooks Bottom BBQ. They’ve also changed the feel to a more country vibe.

Snooks Bottom BBQ will also continue operating at its original spot at 555½ U.S. Highway 50.

Spoons — Are you looking for a place to enjoy a Mother’s Day brunch and forgot to make reservations?

Spoons is advertising that you don’t need any reservations to enjoy their beautiful, large patio. They will be serving tasty food from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and are located at 3090 N. 12th St. in Grand Junction.

Stamp Out Hunger

— This annual event is today. Put a bag of nonperishable groceries by your mail box and your mail carrier will pick it up. All food goes to support local food nonprofits and those in need in the community.

Surf to Turf — The new restaurant in the former location of Golden Corral (1100 Independent Ave.) in Grand Junction is still undergoing renovation. New countertops are currently being installed and they hope to open the restaurant by July.

Western Slope Whiskey Club — They are hosting a special whiskey event at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 20 at SoCo Social in downtown Grand Junction featuring Woody Creek Distillers.

This Roaring Fork Valley distillery is quite popular and these events are always a fun combination of education and deliciousness. Tickets are $35 and available online through the Western Slope Whiskey Club’s website.
