New tastes happening around town
As always, there is a variety of delicious culinary news here in the Grand Valley! Here’s a roundup of some of the new tastes and events happening around us.
Be sure to check out the new Clifton Colorado Community Market, 3270 D½ Road, on Sundays from 9 am to 2 pm through Oct. 27. This is a terrific time to enjoy delightful fresh produce and support local farmers. Have you purchased your tickets for the upcoming 33rd annual Colorado Mountain Winefest? Sept. 21 is the big day for this highly popular and critically acclaimed event in Palisade. You can get tickets and more information at www.coloradowinefest. com.
Community Food Bank will be hosting their second annual fundraising dinner on Sept. 27. Tickets are available at www.foodbankgj.org. (Early bird pricing ends today!) I attended last year and it was a spectacular event filled with delicious foods and beverages that supports a wonderful organization. If you can’t make the dinner, they are always looking for volunteers and love your financial support too.
Devil’s Kitchen restaurant and Sauvage Spectrum’s winemaker, Patric Matysiewski, have joined together to release a new private label wine for the restaurant. This lovely reserve white wine blend features all Grand Valley grapes and is only available at the restaurant or for purchase at The Maverick Hotel located at 840 Kennedy Ave. in Grand Junction. They also collaborated on a red wine that won a bronze medal at the Governor’s Cup awards last year.
EuroMart is now selling sliced hams at their store at 1059 North Ave. in GJ. According to their website, they have, “German hams from Stiglemeier, Westphalian ham, Black Forest ham, and Nuss (smoked) ham. They recently underwent a remodeling of their exterior and it looks great! If you haven’t previously visited this store, you are in for a treat. They carry a variety of European foods such as specialty chocolates and even have a whole freezer full of perogies and other tasty options.
I recently swung by The Feisty Pint in downtown Grand Junction at 359 Colorado Ave. I was pleased with their fast and friendly service and yummy food. I really enjoyed their lovely shaded patio. Since I was just grabbing a little snack, I enjoyed their deep fried mushrooms and a $3.99 side salad. Their prices were good and they have a massive menu I’m looking forward to exploring in the near future.
Highlands Distillery, 782 24 Road, now has $1 pizza slices on weekdays. According to their social media, this “Detroit/Roman style pizza” will be on sale Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from noon until 4 pm. I haven’t tried their pizza yet, but have always enjoyed their sandwiches and tasty beverages. I love this peaceful, tucked-away spot in Grand Junction next to their family’s lavender farm.
I recently enjoyed the fabulous fresh mango coconut bingsu at Sweet Ice in Orchard Mesa next to Thai Smiles at 2692 U.S. Highway 50. Bingsu is a Korean dessert and features frozen shaved milk. I had never had it before and was wowed by its light and airy deliciousness. You can also try it topped with mixed berries or peaches. Sweet Ice is a welcome addition to the Grand Valley and I found it to be cheerful and friendly. They also have boba, ice cream and other options to try. Yum!
I visited the new Taste of Manila food truck a few weeks ago and it was delicious! I ordered their lumpia (a type of eggroll), pancit (noodle dish with pork and vegetables), steamed sio mai (steamed dumplings) and the pork barbecue on skewers. My whole family enjoyed, and quickly devoured, the food. Check out their social media for updates on their schedule and rotating locations. I am thrilled that we now have some Filipino food in town and I wish them (and all these other businesses) great success!
